MANILA, Philippines — Excitement continued to build ahead of the 2021 PBA Rookie Draft, with a record number of aspiring players hoping to earn a spot in the country's premier professional basketball league. Scheduled for March 14, 2021, the draft attracted significant attention from basketball fans and team scouts alike as prospects from various leagues prepared to take the next step in their careers.
According to reports at the time, a total of 97 aspiring players entered the draft pool, making it one of the largest rookie classes in PBA history. The applicants came from major collegiate leagues such as the UAAP and NCAA, as well as development leagues including the MPBL and other basketball organizations across the country. The draft class also featured 31 Fil-foreign applicants, adding further depth and talent to an already competitive field.
Among the most highly regarded prospects were Jamie Malonzo, Joshua Munzon, and Filipino-American standouts Jeremiah Gray and Jason Brickman. These players were widely viewed as leading candidates for the top overall selection, with many analysts projecting one of them to be chosen first in the draft.

The draft order placed Terrafirma Dyip in position to make the first overall selection, followed by NorthPort Batang Pier. The NLEX Road Warriors held back-to-back picks, giving them a valuable opportunity to strengthen their roster with multiple premium prospects. Other teams selecting in the opening round included Rain or Shine, Magnolia, Alaska, San Miguel, Meralco, Phoenix, NorthPort, and Barangay Ginebra.
“For sure, aabot tayo ng third, fourth round para sa akin,” said Marcial in an interview with Noli Eala in his Power and Play program. Ang dami eh, katulad ng mga gagraduate sa UAAP, sa NCAA, ‘yung mga nag-MPBL, at mga nag-Chooks to Go. Sabi nila papasok sila.”
PBA officials and coaches expressed confidence that the depth of the rookie class could extend well beyond the first round. PBA Commissioner Willy Marcial noted that the quality and volume of applicants might result in teams selecting players through the third or even fourth round. NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao echoed those sentiments, describing the incoming draft class as one of the deepest in recent memory.
