MANILA, Philippines — When asked who the first Filipino to play in the NBA was, many basketball fans immediately think of Jordan Clarkson. However, years before Clarkson made his mark in the league, another player of Filipino heritage had already broken barriers and made history in the world's premier basketball league: Raymond Anthony Townsend.

Townsend, a Filipino-American basketball player, is recognized as the first player of Filipino descent to play in the NBA. Before reaching the professional ranks, he starred for the UCLA Bruins, one of the most respected college basketball programs in the United States. His talent earned him selection in the 1978 NBA Draft, where he was chosen 22nd overall by the Golden State Warriors before later continuing his career with the Indiana Pacers.

During his three seasons in the NBA, Townsend appeared in 154 regular-season games and averaged 4.8 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. While his NBA career may not have reached superstar status, his significance extends far beyond statistics. As the first player of Filipino heritage to compete in the league, Townsend paved the way for future generations of Filipino and Filipino-American athletes who dreamed of playing on basketball's biggest stage.

Townsend's connection to the Philippines comes through his mother, Virginia Marella, who hailed from Balayan, Batangas. In recognition of his contributions both on and off the court, he was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the UCLA Filipino Association in 2009.

Today, Jordan Clarkson is one of the most prominent NBA players of Filipino descent, having played for teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Utah Jazz. His success has inspired countless young Filipino basketball fans and aspiring athletes around the world.

The basketball community also continues to follow the journeys of players with Filipino roots, including Kai Sotto, Jalen Green, and Remy Martin. As more Filipino talents emerge on the global stage, it is important to remember the pioneer who started it all. Raymond Townsend's story remains a symbol of opportunity, perseverance, and pride for Filipinos everywhere who aspire to reach the highest levels of the sport.
