MANILA, Philippines — One of the biggest moves ahead of the 2021 PBA season saw Calvin Abueva, widely known as "The Beast," traded from the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters to the Magnolia Hotshots. The blockbuster deal immediately sparked discussions among fans and analysts, with many debating which team benefited the most from the transaction.
Under the trade agreement, Magnolia acquired Abueva, while Phoenix received veteran guard Chris Banchero along with valuable draft selections. Phoenix secured Magnolia's sixth and 18th overall picks in the 2021 PBA Rookie Draft, while Magnolia also gained an additional draft asset as part of the deal.
Abueva's arrival provided a significant boost to the Hotshots. After returning from a lengthy suspension, the former PBA star quickly reminded everyone why he remains one of the league's most impactful players. During the 2020 PBA Bubble season, he averaged 15.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, earning recognition as one of the top performers in the conference.
Magnolia viewed the acquisition as an opportunity to add versatility, toughness, and defensive intensity to its lineup. Already considered one of the league's top defensive teams, the Hotshots were expected to become even stronger with Abueva joining key players such as Paul Lee, Ian Sangalang, Mark Barroca, Gio Jalalon, Justin Melton, and Marc Pingris. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor made him a valuable addition to a squad aiming to contend for a championship.

Meanwhile, Phoenix's decision to move its franchise star was seen as part of a long-term strategy. In acquiring Chris Banchero, the Fuel Masters gained an experienced guard known for his defensive capabilities and leadership. Banchero had built a reputation for guarding some of the PBA's top backcourt players, making him a strong fit for Phoenix's system under head coach Topex Robinson.
The additional draft picks also gave Phoenix greater flexibility in building its roster for the future. The 2021 PBA Rookie Draft was widely regarded as one of the deepest talent pools in recent years, increasing the value of the draft assets included in the deal. The Fuel Masters hoped those selections would help them secure young talent capable of contributing immediately and strengthening the team's frontcourt depth.
Ultimately, the trade appeared to offer benefits for both organizations. Magnolia gained an established star capable of elevating its title aspirations, while Phoenix positioned itself for future growth through a combination of veteran leadership and premium draft opportunities.
As the new season approached, all eyes were on Abueva's integration into Magnolia's lineup and whether the move would help the Hotshots emerge as one of the league's top contenders. Likewise, Phoenix's long-term vision would be closely watched as the franchise looked to maximize the assets acquired in one of the most significant trades of the year.
