PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — As the 2020-21 NBA season moved beyond its halfway point, the race for the league's Most Valuable Player award became increasingly competitive. While many expected LeBron James to secure a fifth MVP trophy, a new frontrunner emerged in the form of Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid, whose dominant performances propelled him to the top of the MVP conversation.
Embiid's impact on both ends of the floor made him one of the most complete players in the league. Despite missing several games during the season, the 76ers center averaged 30.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, helping Philadelphia rise to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. His combination of elite scoring, rebounding, and defense positioned him as the leading candidate for the league's top individual honor.
Close behind Embiid was Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets. The Serbian center continued to redefine the role of a big man with his exceptional all-around skills, averaging 27.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per game. Jokić also added another milestone to his résumé by recording his 50th career triple-double, joining Wilt Chamberlain as one of the few centers in NBA history to reach that mark.
Meanwhile, LeBron James slipped to third in the MVP rankings despite another remarkable season. At 36 years old, the Los Angeles Lakers star continued to perform at an elite level, averaging 25.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game while leading the defending champions through injuries and adversity.

Rounding out the top five were two of the league's brightest stars. Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers secured the fourth spot after consistently carrying his team with clutch performances and explosive scoring. The five-time All-Star averaged 29.8 points and 8.0 assists per game, once again proving himself as one of the NBA's most dangerous offensive weapons.
At fifth was Luka Dončić, whose all-around brilliance remained on full display despite injuries affecting the Dallas Mavericks roster. The Slovenian superstar averaged 28.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game, keeping Dallas in playoff contention in a highly competitive Western Conference.
The rest of the top ten MVP candidates featured some of the biggest names in basketball, including Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Donovan Mitchell. Each star played a crucial role in his team's success while maintaining impressive individual production throughout the season.
With several weeks still remaining in the regular season, the MVP race remained far from decided. However, Embiid's rise to the top signaled a shift in the competition, setting up what promised to be one of the most intriguing award battles in recent NBA history.
