The Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup took a dramatic turn after league officials imposed severe sanctions on teams and individuals involved in the controversial game between the Siquijor Mystics and Lapu-Lapu Heroes, a match that quickly sparked allegations of game-fixing and drew widespread criticism from the basketball community.
Following an investigation and review conducted by VisMin Cup officials in coordination with the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), the league officially expelled the Siquijor Mystics from the tournament. The decision came after what league organizers described as an anomalous game that raised serious concerns about the integrity of the competition.
VisMin Cup Chief Operating Officer Rocky Chan announced that all games involving the Mystics would be invalidated and that everyone connected to the team, including coaches, players, and staff members, would be permanently prohibited from participating in the league. The sanctions affected key members of the organization, including head coach Joel Palapal and assistant coach Magenelio Padrigao, along with the entire roster.
The Lapu-Lapu Heroes were also penalized for their involvement in the incident. Head coach Francis Auquico received a P30,000 fine and was suspended for the remainder of the first round. Several team staff members were likewise fined, while players faced both monetary penalties and suspensions. Rendell Senining was suspended for the rest of the tournament and fined P15,000, while Jojo Tangkay, Reed Juntilla, Monbert Arong, Dawn Ochea, and Ferdinand Lusdoc were suspended for the first round and ordered to pay the same amount.

In an effort to preserve the credibility of the competition, Chan emphasized that the league would take an even stricter stance against future violations. He announced that any individual found guilty of similar offenses moving forward could face a ₱1 million fine and immediate expulsion from the league.
The controversy has generated significant discussion among basketball fans nationwide, especially at a time when opportunities for players were limited due to the pandemic. With major leagues and tournaments either suspended or operating under restrictions during that period, the VisMin Cup served as one of the few stages available for athletes, coaches, and team personnel to continue working and showcasing their talents.
Chan also issued an apology to fans, sponsors, and supporters of the league, stressing the organization's commitment to protecting the integrity of the sport. He reiterated that the VisMin Cup was established not only to provide competitive basketball but also to create employment opportunities for players and staff during difficult times.
As one of the most controversial incidents in Philippine basketball during the pandemic era, the Siquijor Mystics-Lapu-Lapu Heroes case serves as a reminder of the importance of fair play and professionalism in the sport. The league hopes that the decisive actions taken against those involved will help restore public trust and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
