Hidilyn Diaz’s Historic Olympic Gold Brings Millions in Rewards and National Glory

Hidilyn Diaz etched her name into Philippine sports history after winning the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Her remarkable achievement ended a decades-long wait for Olympic gold and inspired millions of Filipinos around the world. 

Competing in the Women's 55kg Weightlifting event, Diaz delivered a record-breaking performance to secure the gold medal. Facing China's Liao Qiuyun in a dramatic final showdown, the Filipina weightlifting star successfully lifted 127 kilograms in the clean and jerk category, finishing with a total of 224 kilograms, just one kilogram ahead of her Chinese rival.

The victory was more than just a personal triumph. It marked the Philippines' first Olympic gold medal since the country began competing in the Summer Games in 1924. Diaz also added a second Olympic medal to her career after previously winning a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, cementing her status as one of the greatest Filipino athletes of all time.

Following her historic achievement, rewards and incentives poured in from both public and private sectors. According to reports, Diaz received substantial cash bonuses from the Philippine government, business leaders, local government units, and various organizations. She was also awarded properties, brand-new vehicles, travel benefits, and several lifetime perks in recognition of her groundbreaking accomplishment. 

Among the major rewards cited were ₱10 million from the Philippine government, ₱10 million from businessman Manny Pangilinan, ₱10 million from San Miguel Corporation's Ramon Ang, and ₱3 million from Deputy Speaker Mikee Romero. Additional incentives included real estate properties, condominium units, vehicles, and travel privileges, bringing the total value of her rewards to well over ₱50 million.
