The Atlanta Hawks enter the 2026-27 NBA season with renewed optimism after a busy offseason that reshaped the roster around emerging star Jalen Johnson and reigning defensive standout Dyson Daniels. Following a 46-win campaign and a playoff appearance in 2025-26, Atlanta has doubled down on versatility, defense, and veteran leadership as it looks to become a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.

Projected Starting Five

PG – CJ McCollum
The veteran floor general brings championship-level experience, scoring punch, and leadership. At 34, McCollum remains one of the league's most reliable shot creators and will be tasked with guiding Atlanta's young core.

SG – Dyson Daniels
Daniels continues to evolve into one of the NBA's premier two-way guards. His length, playmaking ability, and elite perimeter defense make him a cornerstone of Atlanta's future.

SF – Luguentz Dort
Acquired during the offseason, Dort adds toughness, defensive intensity, and playoff-tested experience. His ability to guard opposing stars instantly upgrades Atlanta's defense.

PF – Jalen Johnson
The face of the franchise. Johnson is coming off a breakout season in which he averaged 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists, earning his first All-Star and All-NBA selection. Atlanta is now officially his team.

C – Onyeka Okongwu
Okongwu anchors the paint with rim protection, rebounding, and efficient finishing. His continued development will be crucial to the Hawks' success.

Key Bench Contributors

  • Nickeil Alexander-Walker – Valuable two-way wing capable of starting when needed.
  • Aaron Wiggins – Athletic scorer and defender who strengthens Atlanta's wing rotation.
  • Buddy Hield – Provides elite three-point shooting and instant offense off the bench
  • Corey Kispert – Another sharpshooter who spaces the floor effectively.
  • Jock Landale – Reliable backup center bringing energy and veteran presence.

Exciting Young Talent

The Hawks also added promising rookies and young prospects, including:

  • Kingston Flemings
  • Zuby Ejiofor
  • Henri Veesaar
  • Ryan Nembhard
  • Asa Newell
  • Devin Carter

These players provide Atlanta with long-term upside while deepening an already versatile roster.

Why the Hawks Could Surprise the East

Atlanta's front office has quietly assembled one of the conference's deepest rosters. The combination of Johnson's star power, Daniels' all-around impact, McCollum's leadership, and the defensive additions of Dort and Wiggins gives the Hawks a balanced roster capable of competing with the East's elite. Rather than making a blockbuster splash, Atlanta focused on smart, complementary additions that address both ends of the floor.

If Jalen Johnson continues his ascent into superstardom and the new pieces quickly develop chemistry, the Hawks could emerge as one of the NBA's most intriguing dark-horse contenders in the 2026-27 season. With youth, depth, and defensive versatility on their side, Atlanta appears poised to take another step forward in its post-Trae Young era.
