MANILA, Philippines — As the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) prepared for the opening of its 2021 season, all eyes were on Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, one of the league's most popular and successful franchises. Following a busy offseason highlighted by key acquisitions and the PBA Rookie Draft, fans eagerly anticipated whether the Kings had become even stronger in their quest for another championship.
The defending champions entered the season with a star-studded lineup led by veteran guard Stanley Pringle, who was coming off an impressive campaign in which he averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. Alongside Pringle, Ginebra continued to rely on the athleticism of Japeth Aguilar and the all-around brilliance of Scottie Thompson, two players who had become integral parts of the team's winning culture.
A major boost for the Kings came from the arrival of Christian Standhardinger, one of the most dominant big men in the PBA. Acquired through a blockbuster trade with NorthPort, Standhardinger joined Ginebra after averaging 19.9 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in his previous season. His addition immediately strengthened Ginebra's frontcourt and provided another offensive and defensive weapon for head coach Tim Cone.
The Kings also retained a solid core of experienced veterans, including LA Tenorio, Jeff Chan, Joe Devance, Aljon Mariano, Prince Caperal, and Mark Caguioa. Their leadership and championship experience were expected to play a crucial role as the team pursued another title run.
In addition to its veteran talent, Ginebra added promising young players from the rookie draft. The team welcomed former FEU center Ken Holmqvist and 6-foot-3 guard Brian Enriquez, providing additional depth and potential for the future. Rookie guard Mer Jesper Ayaay also remained part of the squad, adding youthful energy to the roster.
